Drug Wholesalers

Under the Secure Medicine Return Regulations drug wholesalers must submit a list of the drug producers whose covered drugs are sold for residential use in or into King County. In addition to this initial list an annual update of the list is a requirement and due on January 15th annually.

On June 20, 2013, the King County Board of Health passed new Secure Medicine Return Regulations to establish an industry-funded program to collect and properly dispose of unwanted medicines from residents in King County.  Responsibility for program operation and funding is a requirement for pharmaceutical producers; however, the regulations also require drug wholesalers to provide information if they sell covered drugs in or into King County, Washington.

Drug wholesalers who meet the definition as described in the Secure Medicine Return Regulations must provide a list of producers of covered drugs that are sold for residential use in or into King County to the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County.  This initial submission of information and an annual update are the sole requirements for drug wholesalers under the Secure Medicine Return Regulations.

Pharmaceutical Drug Wholesaler licensees with the Washington State Department of Health were tentatively identified as meeting the definition of “drug wholesaler” in the Secure Medicine Return Regulations. A notification letter under Dr. Fleming’s signature was sent by certified mail to tentatively identified drug wholesalers on September 20, 2013.
